Scrutiny panel meeting (29/07/15) on the future of Walkley Library

At the scrutiny panel meeting on Wednesday (July 29th) evening, the decision of the leader of SCC for the sale of Walkley library was discussed. The sale is of the freehold of the building to Forum Café Bars with a 125-year lease of the designated library spaces back to SCC with a sub-lease to Walkley Carnegie Library.

After questions from the public and a lengthy debate on leases, legality and processes, the panel concluded that no further action was required. The negotiations could move forward to the planning and licensing process with a proviso that an update on this be submitted to the scrutiny panel.

WCL will now strive to finalise the most favourable terms and support in order to continue providing a vibrant library service and related activities for Walkley, whilst concentrating on obtaining additional funding and income streams for this facility.

We are most grateful for the continuing dedication of our volunteers, followers and regular library users and welcome new supporters. If you are interested in the future of Walkley library, please consider contributing your skills or time to support the work of the WCL.

We would particularly appreciate additional help with publicity and events, fund-raising and finance, admin support, building management and cleaning, as well as the more obvious library counter work.

Send an e-mail to: for more information or come into the library and ask at the counter.
