The Volunteer Libraries in Sheffield were one of the winners at the Voluntary Action Sheffield “Make a Difference Sheffield 2016 awards”. There were a total of nine categories demonstrating the range of activities and types of groups involved in the sector. They included how organisations engage with the community, involve and support volunteers, promote health and wellbeing, work in partnership with others or support young people. Two organisations were shortlisted for each category and the winners were announced at a prestigious Awards Ceremony and Celebration. A further nine organisations were named as highly commended. Around 800 volunteers run 15 libraries across Sheffield and their intervention stopped these community facilities being closed down. They won for the number and diversity of their volunteers and for the encouragement given to volunteers with learning disabilities, mental health needs and other challenges.
News in brief
The winners of the Frozen on Ice and Gruffalo competitions were Cara Guihen and Beppe Tyas!
The 2 year celebration went really well, with over 150 people helping us celebrate the two years of running the library as volunteers.
It has been a year since the blue sticker collection was launched. We now have 2700+ books, over 700 library users registered and have had over 5000 loans! Who says library use is declining?! :-)
The library is now looking festive thanks to our decorating team, and the Storytime youngsters will be putting snowflakes on the trees in our forest.
